“Nachtall” is a romantic “Schaueergeschichte (scary story)” about non-human actors
A bird sculpture with a square head sits in a tree.
“Nachtall” is a constantly changing performative sound sculpture consisting of microphones, loudspeakers and a neural network (artificial intelligence). The neural network filters the bird calls from the sound signal and creates a new artificial bird song that is played at midnight on the next full moon.
The artificial bird songs vary each month due to the local occurrence of the different birds and the formal variations of the algorithm.
The work creates an ambiguous narrative that interweaves the literary chills of creatures of the night, dystopian scenarios dealing with artificial intelligence, and the romantic image of a nightingale singing at the full moon.
